Tech week.
The week that every person in theatre dreads. Especially when it's the first technical rehearsal of a show process.
This was my life yesterday.
When tech(nical) rehearsal means is that the actors and directors have been in rehearsal for a few weeks, and all the designers have been doing their own thing and showing up to rehearsals here and there. As a lighting designer, my job was to come up with my concept, and then bring it to the director and go to rehearsals to determine where actors will be so I can position the lighting instruments appropriately.
The current show in process is "Much Ado About Nothing" and it's set in Barcelona. The feel of the set is terra cotta and textured archways. So as the assistant designer for the show, my advisor and I decided we wanted to use fun colors that would accent the set and the actors costumes.
Keep in mind that the set isn't finished and the costumes aren't on the actors, but my job isn't finished either. The great part about tech week is being able to see your work on stage, and then being able to tweak it and make it better.
Happy Friday!
